Picks by what you are optimizing for

Nobody buys on one number. These are the pouches that win the trade-off most people are actually making — recalculated live as you change the basis and filters above.

Method

  • The macro and micronutrient figures were transcribed from the Nutrition Facts image on each product page — Peak Refuel publishes calories, protein, weight, water and the full ingredient list as text, but the panel itself only as a picture.
  • Price, serving count and product identity come from the store’s own product data. Dry weight is the panel’s gram serving size × servings, not the marketing “Net Weight” bullet — the same definition used for Mountain House, so cal / g means the same thing on both brand pages. The two differ by a few percent on some items.
  • Where the site’s stat block disagreed with the description bullets, the printed panel broke the tie. Chicken Alfredo’s description still lists a pre-reformulation 870 cal / 53 g; the panel confirms the current 830 / 48.
  • %DV beneath sodium uses the FDA daily value of 2,300 mg.
  • ¢ / cal is cost per calorie in cents — the exact reciprocal of cal / $, shown because it reads as a price. Multiply by 10 for the cost of 1,000 cal, or by roughly 30 for a day of eating. Both are ratios, so neither changes with the pouch/serving basis.
  • cal/g is calories divided by dry mix weight — the number that matters when you carry it. Only pouches whose panel states a gram serving size can be ranked; the rest list “1 package” and show —.

Caveats

  • Three labels do not reconcile with themselves. Stated calories should equal 4·protein + 4·carb + 9·fat. Across these 20 the median gap is 2%, but Mountain Berry Granola is off by 12.7%, Beef Pasta Marinara by 12.0% and Chicken Teriyaki Rice by 6.2%. All 48 Mountain House items pass within 2%. The printed figures are reproduced as-is, not corrected.
  • MeatEater Buffalo Goulash is disputed at the source. Its printed panel says 890 cal / 55 g protein; the website’s own stat block and description both say 740 / 45. The panel is used here, and it is what puts this meal at the top of the calorie-density ranking — treat that placing as provisional.
  • White Chicken Chili’s published “143.8 cal/oz” is wrong. Its own calories and weight give 153.8. The calories and weight are used; the derived figure is ignored.
  • Gluten-free is left unknown for every item. Peak Refuel tags all products GFAVL without defining it anywhere, and an allergen line that omits wheat does not establish gluten free. Selecting the gluten-free filter therefore excludes all Peak Refuel rows — that is the honest result, not a bug. Dairy-free and vegetarian are derived from the published allergen lines and vegan tags where those exist.
